What & Why

What Is a Smart Meter?

A smart meter — technically a Type 4 advanced electricity meter — is the digital replacement for the old accumulation or interval meter sitting in your meter panel right now. Instead of someone walking down your driveway with a clipboard every three months, the new meter quietly reports your consumption (and export, if you have solar) back to your retailer over the mobile network, half-hour by half-hour.

Smart meters became the default for new and replacement installations across NSW in late 2017 under the national Power of Choice reforms. Today, you need one if you’re installing solar PV, a home battery, an EV charger that participates in a controlled-load tariff, or if your existing meter has reached the end of its compliance life. Many retailers also offer upgrades on request — or insist on one when you switch plans.

Here’s the part that catches people out: even though your electricity retailer arranges the meter, the physical install is done by an accredited electrician — and because it involves breaking Ausgrid seals and working on the network side of the installation, only a Level 2 ASP can legally do it. That’s us. We work directly with the major retailers and their metering providers, and we install across the Eastern Suburbs, Inner City and most of Sydney every week.

When You Need One

Six Reasons You Need a Smart Meter Installed

If any of these apply, a smart meter is either required or strongly recommended. Most are non-negotiable.

Installing solar PV

Any new solar installation needs a smart meter to measure both the energy you import from the grid and what your panels export back. Without one, you don’t get paid feed-in credits and the system can’t be safely commissioned.

Adding a home battery

Tesla Powerwall, sonnen, BYD, LG — every modern home battery needs accurate import/export metering to function. The retailer won’t commission the battery until smart metering is in place.

Installing an EV charger

Some EV charger setups (especially those using controlled-load or time-of-use tariffs to charge cheaply overnight) require a smart meter to switch the dedicated circuit. Off-peak EV tariffs won’t work without one.

Old or faulty meter

Mechanical accumulation meters have a finite certified life. If yours is showing signs of failure — stuck disc, incorrect readings, broken display, missing seal — it has to be replaced, and the replacement is always a smart meter now.

Retailer-initiated upgrade

Your retailer (AGL, Origin, EnergyAustralia, Red Energy, etc.) may write to you saying they’re upgrading your meter, either because the existing one is end-of-life or you’ve moved to a tariff that needs it. We do these installs daily.

Phase or supply change

Going from single phase to three phase — common when people install ducted air-con, EV chargers, or large workshops — requires a new meter (and usually a new switchboard and consumer mains too).

What’s Included

A Complete Smart Meter Install

A smart meter install looks simple from the outside — swap one box for another — but the work behind the panel matters. A bad install leads to retailer billing errors, solar systems that don’t register exports, and compliance issues that come back to bite at the next switchboard inspection.

Every smart meter install we deliver includes:

  • Free pre-install checkIf you’re not sure whether your current panel is ready for a smart meter, we can come out, look at the existing switchboard and meter panel, and tell you what else (if anything) needs doing first.
  • Retailer coordinationWe liaise directly with your retailer (or their metering coordinator) to confirm the job, schedule the install window, and lodge all the right paperwork. You don’t play middleman.
  • Authorised seal removalWe’re Level 2 ASP accredited, which means we can legally break Ausgrid seals on the meter panel, complete the work, and re-seal it — no second contractor, no waiting.
  • Safe isolationThe supply is isolated correctly, the panel is tested for stray voltage, and the old meter is removed only after the installation is confirmed dead.
  • New smart meter installationModern Type 4 advanced meter installed per the metering provider’s specification — correctly terminated, torqued to manufacturer spec, and verified.
  • Solar / battery / EV configurationIf the install is for solar or a battery, we ensure the import and export circuits are wired correctly and the meter is programmed to recognise both directions of energy flow.
  • Power restored & testedSupply re-energised, voltage and polarity verified, every circuit checked, RCDs trip-tested where applicable.
  • Ausgrid-compliant resealingPanel resealed with the correct network operator seal and tag so future inspections show authorised access.
  • CCEW & metering paperworkCertificate of Compliance Electrical Work emailed to you, and the metering installation notification lodged with both Ausgrid and your retailer.

Our Process

From Booking to Energised

How a smart meter install actually runs — typically a 1–2 hour job on the day.

01

Call or message us

Tell us what’s triggering the install — solar, battery, EV, retailer letter, or aged meter — and your suburb. We confirm what’s needed.

02

Retailer liaison

We coordinate with your retailer and their metering provider, confirm the job scope, and lock in an install date that suits you.

03

Book the install

Standard meter swaps are usually scheduled within 5–10 business days. Faster if your install is part of a solar or battery commissioning.

04

On-site install

We arrive, isolate supply (power off for 30–60 minutes), remove the old meter, install the smart meter, terminate, test, and reseal.

05

Energise & certify

Power back on, every circuit verified, paperwork lodged with the retailer and Ausgrid, and your CCEW emailed the same day.

FAQs

Smart Meter Questions, Answered

Honest answers to the questions homeowners ask most often before booking a smart meter install.

Do I really need a smart meter for solar?

Yes — effectively, you can’t commission a new solar system in NSW without one. The smart meter is what measures both the electricity you draw from the grid and the surplus you export back, which is the basis for your feed-in credits. Without it, the retailer can’t bill you correctly and the solar installer can’t complete the commissioning.

Who actually pays for a smart meter — me or my retailer?

It varies. If your retailer is initiating the upgrade because your old meter is end-of-life, they typically cover it. If you’re initiating it because you’re installing solar, a battery, an EV charger, or you’re moving to a new tariff, it’s usually billed to you. Get a written quote from us before the install and confirm with your retailer whether they’re subsidising it.

Who installs the meter — the retailer or an electrician?

An electrician — specifically a Level 2 ASP, because the work involves breaking Ausgrid seals and the network side of your installation. The retailer arranges who does the job (through their appointed metering provider) but a person in branded retailer overalls is never actually doing the work. We work directly with most major metering providers.

Will my power bill go up after a smart meter install?

Not because of the meter itself. The smart meter measures exactly what your home uses, just more accurately and in finer detail than the old one. Some people see a small change because the old mechanical meter was reading slightly under (common in very old meters). If you also moved to a time-of-use tariff at the same time, your bill changes because of the tariff, not the meter.

How long will my power be off?

Usually 30 to 60 minutes for a standard residential smart meter swap. We schedule the install to suit you and warn you before isolating supply. For solar or battery installs, the outage window often overlaps with the broader commissioning work happening on the same day.

Do I need to be home for the install?

Someone should be on-site at the start of the job so we can confirm scope and access the meter panel. After that, you’re welcome to leave — most customers do. We let you know when power is back on and email your paperwork the same day.

Can I refuse to have a smart meter installed?

If your existing meter is still working and within its compliance life, you generally aren’t forced to upgrade. But if you’re installing solar, a battery, an EV charger, or your existing meter has failed, a smart meter is effectively mandatory because the alternatives don’t support the service. There’s no real workaround for new installs.

What’s the difference between a Type 4 and Type 5 meter?

A Type 4 is a true smart meter — it communicates remotely, supports time-of-use tariffs, and handles import/export. A Type 5 is a manually-read interval meter (someone still has to come read it). All new installs across NSW are Type 4 unless there’s a specific reason otherwise — it’s the default.
