What & Why
What’s a Private Power Pole?
A private power pole is exactly what it sounds like — a power pole that sits on private property and is owned by the property owner, not Ausgrid. It carries your service line from the closest Ausgrid network pole on the street into your home, granny flat, shed, workshop, farm building or commercial site. If your driveway is long, your house is set back from the street, or your property has detached buildings, chances are there’s a private pole between you and the street — and you own it.
Most homeowners don’t realise this until something goes wrong. The pole develops a lean, a tradesperson notices rot at the base, a storm cracks the timber, a vehicle clips it on the way in, or Ausgrid sends a letter with a defect notice attached. Then the reality hits: you’re responsible for it, and because the service line attached to the top is network supply, only a Level 2 ASP can legally work on it.
We replace private power poles across Sydney every month. Timber, steel and concrete; single residential up to commercial and rural; planned upgrades and emergency callouts after storms. We coordinate the Ausgrid network disconnection, the excavation, the new pole installation, the service line transfer, and the final reconnection — then certify the whole job to AS/NZS 3000 and the relevant network standards.
Warning Signs
Six Signs Your Private Power Pole Needs Attention
Power poles fail gradually — until they don’t. Catching these signs early avoids defect notices, insurance complications, and the much bigger job of an emergency replacement after a pole has fallen.
Visible lean
Any lean greater than a few degrees off vertical is a warning sign. Service line tension can hold a leaning pole upright for years — right up to the moment it can’t. Don’t wait for it to fall.
Soft, rotten or termite-damaged base
Timber poles rot at the ground line where moisture sits, and termites finish what the rot starts. Push a screwdriver into the timber at the base — if it goes in easily, the pole is at or near the end of its life.
Ausgrid defect notice
Ausgrid inspects private poles during routine network patrols. If they identify yours as deteriorated, leaning, or unsafe, they issue a defect notice — usually with 21 days to rectify. We work fast inside that window.
Storm or lightning damage
Cracked timber, split bases, scorch marks, or visible lightning damage anywhere on the pole or service line fittings. Often invisible from the road — worth checking after every major storm.
Vehicle impact
Reversing trailers, delivery trucks and the occasional errant driver clip private poles regularly. Even a glancing hit can compromise the pole’s integrity and isn’t always visible without inspection.
Just plain old
Untreated timber poles last 25–40 years, treated hardwood up to 50, and steel or concrete 50+. If your pole predates the house and the house is older than you, it’s probably overdue.

What’s Included
A Complete Pole Replacement
Pole work is one of the most coordination-heavy Level 2 jobs we do — Ausgrid disconnection, excavation, lifting and standing the new pole, service line transfer, reconnection, paperwork. Get any of those steps wrong and you end up with either a non-compliant install or a long delay.
Every private pole replacement we deliver includes:
- Free on-site assessmentWe come out, inspect the existing pole, check the service line condition, measure the run from the network pole, and discuss pole material options (timber, steel, concrete) based on your property and budget.
- Ausgrid coordination & outage bookingWe lodge the paperwork with Ausgrid for the service-line disconnection, book the outage window, and notify all affected parties. Typical lead time 1–2 weeks.
- Defect notice managementIf you’ve received an Ausgrid defect notice, we handle it inside the rectification window and provide all the evidence Ausgrid needs to close the defect.
- Safe disconnection & isolationOn the day, Ausgrid (or we, as their authorised representative) disconnects the service line, then we isolate and verify dead before any pole work starts.
- Removal of existing poleOld pole carefully removed and disposed of legally. For rotted timber poles, we sometimes need to extract a decayed butt section that’s broken below ground line.
- Excavation & new pole installationNew hole dug to AS/NZS 3000 depth requirements, new pole (timber, steel or concrete to your preference) set, plumbed vertical, and backfilled with engineered fill or concrete as required.
- Service line transferService line lifted across to the new pole, new point of attachment fitted (insulator, bracket, hardware), and the consumer mains connection refreshed if needed.
- Reconnection & testingAusgrid reconnects the service line at the network pole, we re-energise, verify voltage, test the earthing and polarity, and confirm everything is operating correctly.
- CCEW & network notificationCertificate of Compliance Electrical Work issued, network operator paperwork lodged, and where applicable, defect notice closure submitted to Ausgrid.

Why Sydney Property Owners
Choose Us for Pole Work
Private pole replacement is a job most electrical contractors quietly avoid because of the network coordination, the heavy plant required, and the safety implications of working with overhead live conductors. It’s a job we do every month — and here’s why people keep recommending us:

- Ausgrid & Endeavour approved — We handle network disconnection and reconnection paperwork end-to-end
- Defect notices handled fast — Work scheduled inside the 21-day Ausgrid rectification window
- Choice of pole materials — Timber, steel or concrete — we recommend based on your property, not what we have in the yard

FAQs
Power Pole Questions, Answered
The questions homeowners and strata managers ask most often when a pole needs work.
How do I know if the pole on my property is mine or Ausgrid’s?
Network poles (owned by Ausgrid) almost always sit on or immediately next to the street or footpath, and carry high-voltage lines running between multiple properties. Private poles sit on your property, carry a single service line down to your building, and often have a small numbered tag or no tag at all. If you’re unsure, send us a photo and we’ll tell you in five minutes.
Why is the pole my responsibility and not the network’s?
Because the supply network ends at the network operator’s last pole (or the underground pit on the street). Everything from there to your switchboard — service line, private pole, point of attachment, consumer mains — is the customer’s responsibility under NSW network rules. It’s a common surprise but the legal split is clear.
What materials can a private power pole be made of?
Three common options. Treated hardwood timber is the most affordable and the look most people are used to — typical lifespan 30–50 years. Galvanised steel is fire-resistant, termite-proof and lasts 50+ years, ideal for bushfire-prone or coastal sites. Concrete is the longest-lived option and the most durable, but heavier and more expensive to install.
How long does a private pole replacement take?
From the day you approve the quote, expect 1–2 weeks to coordinate the Ausgrid network outage. The actual install day is usually a single full day on-site — with power off for around 4–6 hours while the service line is transferred. For emergencies (fallen pole, storm-down service), we can often work to a much faster timeline.
My pole has fallen — what do I do right now?
Step one: stay well clear and treat all fallen conductors as live. Step two: if anyone is in danger, call 000. Step three: if the network supply is still energised, call Ausgrid on 13 13 88 immediately. Step four: call us on 0432 956 784 — 24/7 — and we’ll begin coordinating an emergency replacement.
Is pole replacement covered by my home insurance?
Often, yes — if the damage is the result of storm, lightning, fire, vehicle impact or another insurable event. We provide detailed assessment reports, photographic evidence and itemised invoices for claims. Wear-and-tear replacement (rot, age) is usually not covered, but always worth checking with your insurer first.
Will my neighbours’ power be affected?
Only if your private pole carries service to multiple properties (occasionally the case in older subdivisions or rural arrangements). Standard single-property private poles only affect your own supply. We confirm this in the site assessment and notify any affected neighbours through Ausgrid if needed.
How long will the new pole last?
Depends on the material and site conditions. Treated hardwood: 30–50 years before next replacement. Galvanised steel: 50+ years, with occasional inspection of the base for corrosion. Concrete: 50–80+ years. In coastal Eastern Suburbs locations — Bondi, Bronte, Coogee, Vaucluse — salt air is a factor, and we’ll factor it into our material recommendation.
