The Network Operator
What Is an Ausgrid Electrician?
Ausgrid is the electricity distribution network operator for Sydney, the Central Coast and the Hunter region — around 1.7 million customers across some 22,000 square kilometres. They own and operate the high-voltage network, the local poles and wires running down your street, the transformers, the pits, and the service lines that feed into individual properties.
If you live anywhere in the Eastern Suburbs — Bondi, Randwick, Woollahra, Vaucluse, Maroubra and across to the Inner City — your electricity comes through Ausgrid’s network. Anything that touches that network on the customer side — service lines, meter panels, consumer mains, private poles, defect rectification, new connection applications — has to be done by an Ausgrid-approved Level 2 ASP.
Being Ausgrid-approved isn’t a one-off tick. It involves ongoing compliance with Ausgrid’s Network Standards (the ANS series), regular audits, current insurance, and a track record of lodging paperwork correctly. It’s the credential that lets us break Ausgrid seals, energise new supplies, close out defect notices and coordinate planned network outages on customers’ behalf. We hold full accreditation, and we do this work every single day across the Eastern Suburbs.
When You Need One
Six Situations That Need an Ausgrid Electrician
Any time you’re dealing with the Ausgrid network on the customer side, this is when you’ll need an approved contractor.
Defect notice received
Ausgrid’s inspection teams flag thousands of consumer-side faults every year — rotted poles, deteriorated consumer mains, failing service lines, broken seals. You’ll typically have 21 days to rectify. We handle the entire process end-to-end.
New connection application
Building a new home, granny flat, extension, commercial fit-out or strata block? Connecting to the Ausgrid network requires an approved Level 2 ASP to lodge the connection application, complete the service work and arrange energisation.
Adding three-phase or larger load
Going from single phase to three phase, adding ducted air-con to a commercial space, or installing high-capacity EV charging infrastructure often requires a network upgrade application and Ausgrid approval.
Planned network outage
Major renovations, demolitions, or any work that requires the service line to be disconnected for an extended period. We coordinate the outage with Ausgrid and arrange reconnection on completion.
Network damage or failure
Storm damage to the service line, vehicle impact on a pole, or any situation where your supply has been physically damaged. We work with Ausgrid to assess, repair and restore.
Smart metering coordination
Smart meter installations involve breaking Ausgrid seals and lodging metering notifications. Only an approved Level 2 ASP can do this work — we coordinate with both the retailer and Ausgrid.
Defect notice in hand? Send us a photo and the reference number. We’ll quote, book and rectify inside the 21-day window — and lodge the closure paperwork so the defect comes off your property’s record. Call 0432 956 784.

FAQs
Ausgrid Electrician Questions, Answered
Common questions from Eastern Suburbs property owners dealing with Ausgrid network work.
Who exactly is Ausgrid?
Ausgrid is the electricity distribution network operator for Sydney, the Central Coast and the Hunter region of NSW. They own and maintain the poles, wires, substations and service lines that deliver electricity to about 1.7 million customers. They’re not your electricity retailer (AGL, Origin, EnergyAustralia, etc.) — they’re the network behind whichever retailer you’re with.
What is an Ausgrid defect notice?
It’s a formal notice issued by Ausgrid when their inspectors identify a fault on the customer side of the network — typically a deteriorated private pole, damaged service line, unsafe point of attachment, broken seal, or non-compliant consumer mains. The notice gives you a deadline (usually 21 days) to rectify the issue using an approved Level 2 ASP.
What happens if I ignore an Ausgrid defect notice?
After the rectification window expires, Ausgrid is entitled to disconnect your supply for safety reasons and bill you for any emergency repair work they have to do themselves. Defect notices also stay on your property’s network record, which can come up during property sales and insurance claims. Always rectify within the window — we make it easy.
Do I have to use an Ausgrid-approved contractor?
For any work on the Ausgrid network side of your installation — service lines, consumer mains, point of attachment, meter panel, private pole — yes. Standard A-grade electricians aren’t permitted to do this work, and Ausgrid won’t accept defect closures or new connection applications from non-approved contractors.
How do you become an Ausgrid-approved electrician?
You first need to be an accredited Level 2 ASP under the NSW scheme. From there, Ausgrid approval involves ongoing compliance with their Network Standards (ANS series), regular audits, current insurance, and a record of lodging paperwork correctly. It’s reviewed and renewed periodically.
What’s the difference between Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy?
Both are NSW electricity distribution network operators — they just cover different parts of the state. Ausgrid covers Sydney, the Central Coast and the Hunter. Endeavour Energy covers the Greater Western Sydney area, Blue Mountains, Southern Highlands and Illawarra. We’re approved on both networks, so we can work across the boundary as needed.
How quickly can you respond to network emergencies?
For storm damage, fallen poles, downed service lines and other emergencies, we dispatch 24/7 and typically arrive within 60 minutes anywhere in the Eastern Suburbs, 60–90 minutes for the broader Sydney metro. For genuine safety risks (live conductors on the ground) always call Ausgrid directly on 13 13 88 first — they can de-energise the network.
Can you help with a new connection application from scratch?
Yes — we manage the entire process. Connection application lodgement with Ausgrid, site planning, service line installation, metering coordination with your chosen retailer, and final energisation. For new builds, we recommend involving us early so the application timing aligns with your construction schedule.
